Loving the life I never imagined

I never imagined that I'd be one of *those* moms - I had never heard of babywearing. I thought midwives were a thing of the past. I never imagined I'd be a mom in the first place. Now I'm on the other side --I home waterbirthed my son in April 2010. My life is forever changed, and forever changing. This is my journey. Come along and learn with me!

Why Penguin?

I'm Chakraverte. I'm keeping this blog semi anonymous.  I don't know who reads this, but I'd worry that someone could use the information in some nefarious way that is beyond my imagination.  Paranoid? Maybe.  I've seen several other successful mommybloggers do the same sort of semi anonymous thing, and it just seems to be a good idea.

So, I'll refer to myself as Chakraverte, hubby as Mr. Chakraverte, and baby boy as Penguin.

Why Penguin?

Before we knew a gender, we knew we'd have to call him something. "it" and "the baby" just didn't cut it. As we planned for the future, we knew that I'd work during the day, and Mr. C would have to take classes at night. We'd switch off, like penguins. So...baby penguin it was.

Now that I think of it, there have been a lot of penguins in our relationship.  One of our first dates was to take Mr. C's son, I'll call him Monkey, to the Central Park Zoo. I got that tingly "this is really IT" feelings when we were in the penguin cave.  There is a beautiful poem about the love that penguins have for each other on the glass of the penguin house. I can't find the words -- I guess we'll have to go back soon with little penguin.

Later on in our relationship, we talked about the penguin in Happy Feet as a metaphor for dealing with Monkey's special needs.   Mr. C used March of the Penguins to describe the weight of fatherhood -- citing the example of the father penguin who loses control of the egg, and the chick dies.  I cried watching that the first time, before I was a mom.  Now that I have my own penguin, I don't know if I'd make it through that scene at all!
